b. August 22, 1819, in Plattsburgh, New York; d. 1899, in Chicago, Illinois. In 1840, Douglass moved from New York to Galena, Illinois, where he was admitted to the bar in 1841. As a lawyer, he was involved in several mining cases. He left Galena in 1855 and moved to Chicago, Illinois, to become counsel for the Illinois Central Railroad. He later became the railroad’s president until his retirement in 1875.
